We officially opened our doors to consumers in 1976, but several parents and community members on Chicago’s Southeast Side had been conferring for some time before that about could be done to enrich the lives of their children and friends with special needs. Below you will see how our timeline unfolded.
1969
Parents and friends of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities meet as an informal group and start fundraising and planning
1971
A small group of parents from the southeast side recognize a need for options and opportunities for their special needs children & the group incorporates as a non-profit organization
1972
The first Board of Directors is formed
1976
The first building, Corona Work Activity Center, opens at 10657 Buffalo Avenue under the direction of Robert Probst
1977
Ten attendees are enrolled at the Corona Center
1978
The first of many pancake breakfast fundraisers takes place, and St. Francis de Sales High School holds a Dance-a-thon with proceeds donated to South Chicago Parents and Friends.
1980
LAMP after school and weekend programs are initiated (Leisure, Arts & Music Program)
1981
Administrative Offices open at 10111 S. Ewing Avenue, and the recreational program serves 40 consumers at the Corona Center
1982
Tom Schell is recognized for Outstanding Employee Service (first time that award is offered to employees)
1983
Attendance at Corona Activity Center grows to 120 attendees
1988
The 14,000 sq. ft. Cap Center (named for the Cap family, founders) opens at 10241 S. Commercial Avenue, and all programs are consolidated there
1989
Supported employment program begins
1994
Major capital improvements to the Cap Center
1995
Supported Employment Program expands to retail and fast food
1996
SCPF operating budget passes $1,000,000 mark
1997
Senior programs debut at the Cap Center & SCPF receives National CARF accreditation
2000
First annual Dinner Dance (WLS-TV’s John Garcia serves as the Master of Ceremonies)
2001
SCPF completes a $500k remodel/building expansion at the Cap Center & 25 Years of service
2004
The inaugural George Schell Classic Golf Outing takes place
2010
Expanded Home Based Support Services
2015
Opened male and female CILA houses in South Holland, IL
2016
40th Anniversary Gala honors founders Patrick Reynolds and the Cap Family
2021
Administrative offices move to the former New Hope Center building in Dolton, IL, newly renovated and named the Dolton Center
2022
Tom Schell celebrates his 20th year as Executive Director of SCPF
